What does STD testing look for?

STD testing looks for signs of sexually transmitted bacteria, viruses, and parasites within the body. The common STDs include:

  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Chlamydia
  • Syphilis
  • Gonorrhea
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Genital herpes
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)

While STDs affect the reproductive system, if untreated, they can spread and cause serious problems throughout your body. Fortunately, STD testing makes early diagnosis and treatment possible.

When do I need STD testing?

If you’re sexually active, Thera will recommend STD testing (usually blood, urine, or genital swab tests) during your gynecology or annual exams. And if you experience any of the following issues, you should be tested for STDs.

  • Unusual genital discharge
  • Strong vaginal odor
  • Pain when peeing
  • Pain during sex
  • Genital rash
  • Itchy genitals or anus
  • New bumps, warts, blisters, sores, or other growths around your genitals or anus
  • Bleeding between periods

These symptoms occur with other health conditions as well. But lab tests can isolate the cause of your problems and provide a diagnosis.

Is bacterial vaginosis (BV) an STD?

BV is not an STD, but it’s often mistaken for one. It’s a very common problem today in women, affecting about 35% of them in their lifetime.

BV occurs when harmful bacteria overpower the good bacteria in your vagina. It can cause symptoms similar to STDs, like burning when you pee or discolored vaginal discharge. And your risk of BV increases with sexual activity.

However, it’s not an STD, and it’s treatable. Testing a small sample of vaginal discharge can identify BV, and you can have that test alongside STD tests.

How long do STD testing results take?

Different Approach Wellness Center’s on-site lab processes their STD tests, providing fast results. When your results are ready, Thera explains everything you need to know.

If you have an STD, remember: all STDs are treatable. Thera can prescribe a treatment, like lifestyle changes and antibiotics, that you can start right away.
